Christmas is a time of goodwill and sharing and a time for family. As a family-run company who cares about providing the best products and service, a lot of the values of Christmas are ones that we adhere to on a day-by-day basis. That’s why for Christmas 2019, we made sure as a company that it wasn’t just our friends and family who benefitted from our generosity, but those in need!
December saw Emplas start the Reverse Advent Calendar. A Reverse Advent Calendar saw items of food donated every day, which were then taken to our local foodbank. Everything from biscuits to long-life milk, squash, cereal and sweets were donated to the Kettering Food Bank.
Although Christmas is meant to be the season of joy and celebration, for far too many it can be difficult to know where the next meal will come from. For many food banks, Christmas is the busiest time of year with demand on goods near breaking point. By donating to Kettering Food Bank, our items will help support those in food poverty who cannot put a meal on the table.
So far, the company has donated more than 70 kilograms of food to Kettering Food Bank.
The second goodwill gesture of the festive season saw members of the Emplas team dig deep into their wardrobes for their Christmas jumpers. The team raised money as part of the nation-wide Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day Each wearer had to donate £2, which will help change a child’s life.
Christmas Jumper Day and the Reverse Advent Calendar are just two of the fundraising events Emplas participates in throughout the year. Judith Chadwick, Emplas’ HR Manager, said: “We have traditionally taken part every year with Christmas Jumper day as a way to get into the Christmas spirit and have some fun at work. This has extended in the last couple of years as we try to do something like this 2-3 times a year e.g Genes for Jeans Day, Comic Relief. Colleagues enjoy dressing down for the day, as well as making and buying cakes.
“The Food Bank came about from a request from Tina Johnson (wife of our chair, Kevin Johnson/mother of managing director Ryan). She volunteers regularly with the Kettering Food Bank and asked if we would support it which we started doing on an ad-hoc basis during the summer.
“Some of our colleagues then suggested the Reverse Advent calendar and we got the support from everyone during December.”
On receiving the donation for Kettering Food Bank, Tina Johnson, director of Emplas, said: “The Kettering Food Bank, which exists because no one should go hungry, is extremely generous support in 2019. Their donations of food throughout the summer months and at Christmas were invaluable in helping the most vulnerable people in Kettering and the surrounding villages. Thank you once again.”
